From here, continue through the beautiful, castle-dotted region of Sigulda and stop at Turaida Castle* for a guided tour. Dating from the 13th century, this restored castle stands on the Gauja River and has a fairytale-like appearance with its red-brick walls, turrets, and tall cylindrical tower. After arriving in Riga in the afternoon, check into your 4-star hotel.

Day 7 | Riga  B,D

A full day devoted to Riga awaits today. Founded in the 13th century, this strategically located city became an important Baltic trading port and has seen periods of occupation by the Polish, Germans, Swedish and Soviets, all of whom left their mark on it. One result is a striking variety of architecture, including, most famously, an array of stunning, Germanic art-nouveau buildings considered unparalleled anywhere else. On your tour, take a stroll through the UNESCO-protected Old Town to see highlights such as Riga Castle, the ornate St. Jacob's Cathedral, St. Peter's Church, and other signature sights. As you explore, listen as your guide brings Riga's past alive with colorful stories and intriguing historical facts. Having explored old Riga, this afternoon is free for you to discover and enjoy the city on your own, perhaps scouting out souvenirs in the shops. In the early evening, come with us to a historic restaurant, deep in the Old Town, to savor a traditionally Latvian 3-course dinner.

Day 8 | Riga – Rundale Castle – Hill of Crosses, Lithuania – Vilnius  B,D

Set out after breakfast today for Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, and known as the ‘Pearl of the Baltics,' for its leafy parks, lovely squares, and handsome baroque, Gothic, and neo-classical architecture. Have your camera ready as you venture southward through lush countryside and stop to admire the exterior of Rundale Castle, a stunning baroque palace built for the Dukes of Courland during the 18th century. Hear the story behind the grand palace and after crossing the border into Lithuania, pause to see the incredible Hill of Crosses in Siaulai. This hill is covered in thousands of hand-made crosses planted here by ordinary people as a mark of their spiritual beliefs, and makes an extraordinary sight. This afternoon, arrive in Vilnius, and after checking in at your hotel, enjoy time at leisure before dinner.

Later today, leave Vilnius on a 1.5-hour journey to Trakai Castle*, a 14th-century castle set on an island in Lake Galvė. Drink in the gorgeous setting of the lake and take a guided tour of the stone fortifications, whose cluster of towers is reflected in the mirror-glass waters. Finally, return to Vilnius and relax over a dinner at a medieval-themed restaurant within strolling distance of your hotel.
