Part of the beautiful Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Hell Valley (Jigokudani) is a spectacularly formed valley created by volcanic eruptions several thousand years ago and now is the main source of sightseeing in this small town. Volcanic pits, steam vents and geysers are constantly puffing out from the earth providing a dramatic and beautiful scene. After exploring the Lake Toya, a stunning volcanic caldera lake in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, we check in to a ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) or hotel at Noboribetsu Onsen area for dinner and overnight accommodation. Spend the evening as you wish, perhaps soaking in the lakeside hot springs whose waters are believed to have healing effects.

Visit Showa New Mountain (Showa Shinzan), a volcanic lava dome, created between 1943 and 1945 after a series of strong earthquakes. Amazed to see the peak is now still actively smoking. We then venture south to the major park in Hokkaido, Onuma Quasi National Park, for its picturesque, island dotted lakes and majestic dormant volcano. Afterwards, head to Mt. Hakodate Observatory and take the ropeway to the summit for a jewelry-box-like night view which is renowned in Japan as one of the Three Best Night Views in the Hokkaido, Japan and the world along with Hong Kong and Naples.

Day 5 | Hakodate (函館) – Seikan Underwater Train (水中隧道新幹線) – Aomori (青森) - Lake Towada (十和田湖) - Towada Hot Spring (十和田溫泉)  B,L,DH

Day 6 | Towada (十和田) – Oirase Stream Hot Spring (奧入瀨溪流溫泉)  B,L,DH

Following breakfast, we head to the Oirase Stream (奧入瀨溪流), the most famous and popular mountain stream for autumn colors in Japan. The stream flows along the floor of the Oirase Gorge, winding among trees which, while a lush green in spring and summer, turn brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange from late October through early November. Over dozen waterfalls cascade down into the stream all along its length from the walls of the gorge. Kumoi no Taki Waterfall (雲井之瀧), Choshi Otaki (銚子大瀧), Ashura Current (阿修羅之流), and Kujukushima (99 Islands) are just a few of the many popular waterfalls and scenes in Oirase Stream. Many visitors and photographers try their hand at taking the best shot. The Oirase Stream excursion takes about 5 hours. Check in to the hotel that stands alone near the Oirase Stream, for dinner, accommodation, and the undisturbed serenity of nature.

Next, Lake Tazawa will be visited. At 423 meters, this picture-perfect, sapphire-blue Crater Lake is the deepest lake in Japan. Finally, arrive in the castle town of Kakunodate. Developed in the early 17th century as a city of samurai, this town is often referred to as a “Little Kyoto”. Though the castle no longer remains, its legacy can be seen in the well-preserved century-old samurai houses.
