Board your international flight in the U.S. and fly to Berlin, Germany’s capital and one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan and exciting cities.

Arrive in Berlin and after meeting your tour representative in the arrivals hall in the airport, enjoy a comfortable transfer to your deluxe hotel in the city. After checking in, there’s time to relax or get a taster of Berlin before sitting down to dinner at your hotel with your fellow travelers this evening.

DAY 3

Berlin – Potsdam – Berlin

Today begins with a memorable sightseeing tour of Berlin, one of the largest and most exciting cities in the European Union. Boasting a turbulent history, this vibrant metropolis enjoyed a renaissance in 1990 when it reclaimed its position as the capital of a reunified Germany, and now blends stately buildings with world-class museums and a heady social scene. This morning, see its best-known sights, from the elegant boulevards of Kurfürstendamm and Unter den Linden (Under the Linden Trees), to the Reichstag, Siegessäule, and Kanzleramt; and the Brandenburger Tor, Lustgarten, Forum Fridericianum, Rotes Rathouse, Nikolaiviertel, Gendarmenmarkt, Potsdamer Platz, and Botschaftsviertel. Having explored the capital this morning, switch to the historic nearby town of Potsdam this afternoon, with a tour of the gardens of Sanssouci Park, created by Frederick the Great in the mid-18th century. Return to Berlin hotel in time for a hotel dinner this evening.

Berlin—Dresden

After breakfast, view the rural landscapes of eastern Germany on route to Dresden, a glorious city on the River Elbe that was heavily bombed in World War II. On arrival at midday, see why the city is often nicknamed the “Florence of the Elbe” on a tour of its Baroque and Renaissance architectural gems. Marvel at the Frauenkirche—a stunning Baroque church that has become a symbol of the revitalized city—together with the Neumarkt, Semper Opera House, Zwinger, Residenzschloss, Bruhl Terrace, Catholic Court Church, Taschenbergpalais and graceful Augustus Bridge. Later, check in to your Dresden hotel and relax over dinner in its restaurant tonight.

Dresden—Wroclaw, Poland

Leave Germany this morning and cross the border into Poland’s southwestern province of Silesia to visit its capital—Wroclaw. After arrival, discover the charms of this history-steeped city—of dubbed the “City of 100 Bridges”—on a tour of its impressive Gothic Old Town, reconstructed after WWII, and situated on Ostrow Tumski, an island bordered by the River Oder. Admire the Gothic Town Hall in the Old Market Square, as well as highlights such as the University building and its magnificent Aula Leopoldina Baroque hall. Then, check in at your Wroclaw hotel and savor dinner there this evening.

Wroclaw—Oswiecim (Auschwitz)—Krakow

After breakfast, relax as you travel south to the small Polish town of Oswiecim, which is better known by its German name of Auschwitz and overshadowed by its past as the location of this most notorious of WWII Nazi concentration camps. This afternoon, pay a sobering visit to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp-Complex*, now a UNESCO World Heritage site and museum and monument to its victims. Tour the outbuildings—which now serve as the museum—and see locations such as the gas chambers and crematoria—as you hear tales of the terrible atrocities that were committed here. Later, travel onward to Krakow to check in at your hotel and enjoy dinner.

DAY 7

Krakow – Wieliczka – Krakow

A morning of discovering Krakow, often considered Poland’s most beautiful city, awaits after breakfast. Join a guide to explore the UNESCO-protected Old Town, where slender lanes radiate out from the enormous, cobbled Main Market Square and its crowning glory—the ornate Cloth Hall. Take insights including St. Mary’s Church, the 14th-century Jagiellonian University, and Barbican Tower, one of the last remaining relics of Krakow’s medieval fortifications. You’ll also stroll around the hilltop Wawel Castle and Cathedral, the one-time seats of Poland’s kings. This afternoon, head for the UNESCO-listed Wieliczka Salt Mine*, where a string of 20 underground chambers have been chiseled from rock salt to dazzling effect; including the Chapel of St. Kinga, with its glittering salt-carved altars, statues, and chandeliers. Krakow—Radom – Warsaw

Following breakfast, travel north via Radom to Poland’s lovely capital of Warsaw. Upon arrival in the early afternoon, take a sightseeing tour of this remarkable city, which has remarkably survived an almost continuously war-torn past. Hear tales of its turbulent history as you roam the Old Town—rebuilt after its destruction in WWII—and view Castle Square and King Sigismund’s Column, along with the Royal Castle, St. John’s Cathedral, and austere Soviet-period Palace of Culture and Science. Other sights include the Mermaid Statue, Chopin Monument, and leafy Lazienki Park with its Palace on the Water. Round off your day with dinner at your hotel in the city.

Vilnius—Panevezys – Riga, Latvia

Once the hub of the wealthy Duchy of Lithuania, its picturebook Old Town brims with historical sights. Follow your guide to see its 18th-century Gediminas Tower, Vilnius Cathedral, and Palace of the Dukes; and stop to admire St. Anna’s Church, St. Bernadine’s Church, the St. Peter and Paul Church, and the Old University and Chapel of Dawn, famous for its painting of the Madonna. Next, continue your journey to Latvia via Panevezys, passing forests and farms on route to Riga, its capital. Tallinn

Admire its highlights on a guided tour of the cobbled streets and squares, checking off its medieval walls and fortifications, in addition to the Upper Town’s Toompea Castle, Dome Cathedral, and onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral before exploring the Lower Town, with its gorgeous Old Town Square, Town Hall, Niguliste Church, and Oliveste Church. Also, take a scenic drive along the Bay of Tallinn to see its ruined St. Brigitta Convent and Pirita Olympic Harbour. 1. Caro Hsu was good and took good care of us along the trip. 2. I suggest to cover dinner everyday except maybe for the first and the second day in the beginning of the trip to avoid looking for meals on our own.
